Supporting Students in Our Back Yard
This spring we donated backpacks to help Operation Backpack and Swing for the Fences, two programs helping kids in Wilson County, North Carolina.
Operation Backpack
What helps students learn better? Start with the basics – pencil and paper. That’s the goal of the Wilson County Schools Operation Backpack program. It has provided backpacks filled with school supplies to students in need for the past five years.
Chick-fil-A of Wilson owner and operator Christy Proctor hosts a fundraiser for this program every year around her birthday. Her “Bucks for Backpacks” campaign collects backpacks and school supplies for Operation Backpack.
We were happy to add a donation of backpacks to Christy’s pile of birthday presents.
Swing for the Fences
The Swing for the Fences program rewards Wilson County middle school students for reading. It is sponsored by the Wilson Tobs Baseball Club.
Students score “homeruns” for every 400 pages read. Homeruns then earn students tickets to Wilson Tobs games this summer.
The top readers from every middle school also win prize money and packages. The awards will be given out at “Swing for the Fences Celebration Night” on June 7, 2018, at Fleming Stadium.
